There’s always some room for dark-flavored and smartly played Heavy Metal in my books – and this Finnish 5-piece act DIRGE ETERNAL pretty much reclaims its place in that particular box for the musical achievements that the featured 5 songs on this recording, represent pretty darn strongly indeed. This EP, titled "Lucifer’s Lullabye", which DIRGE ETERNAL recorded in 2010 already, displays DIRGE ETERNAL’s whole capability to be quite unique virtuosos with their brand of Heavy Metal, which really relies on darker and more testosterone-stinking musical ingredients than any nice ‘n easy approach that could be considered somehow radio-friendly and all kinds of sugar and honey pouring, trendy Metal music. In fact, DIRGE ETERNAL do make quite a lot of distance to that kind of cheap and crappy stuff by their meaty and horror-infested, mid-tempo Heavy Metal. It’s no denying that KING DIAMOND has worked as a huge influence for DIRGE ETERNAL both musically as well as thematically, but without Mr. Diamond’s trademark-ish falsetto vocalism though. Vocalist (or more accurately, now ex – vocalist) Jani Perta, who parted ways with DIRGE ETERNAL in the fall of 2012, has a good voice although he doesn’t really make any spine-chilling screams in between the songs to add more power and aggression into the songs. It’s kinda pity anyway that he’s not a part of DIRGE ETERNAL’s line-up anymore as the guy’s clearly got a fitting enough voice for the kind of stuff what they do. The beginning of EP’s title track ‘Lucifer’s Lullabye’ brought surprisingly one OZZY OSBOURNE’s most known songs to mind – I mean riff-wise in particular, but other than that, you cannot completely hide away from that one fact either how much Mr. Diamond’s family ghost lurks behind this track, too. In short I would say the song is just killer, which obviously isn’t saying much. I could go even further and further by analyzing each track in a very detailed way if I wanted to, but I will spare all of you from that pain this time. Instead of that I simply suggest you to check this band out because as we all know, all the best and most convincing ghosts come from the darkest corners.
