Italian blasphemers and perverted unholy lords in DIVINE CODEX (Atum on drums and synthesizers and Guh Lu on guitars and bass) paid a visit at Sound Industry Studio in Rome, Italy during July 2011, having a serious intention to put Jesus’ followers on their weak knees by their 2nd full-length crusade titled "The Dark Descent", fighting mercilessly against all things holy. Both fellows have a noteworthy background in other bands already – from IMPIETY to SETHERIAL to MALFEITOR – and so on, so one can pretty much imagine what may be at the end of their road when it comes to the guys’ unceremoniously plans to bring some darkness into innocent people’s households. And that’s what they do on this very much venom-spitting and crosses-crushing opus – with the help of session members Mysteriis on vocals (SETHERIAL) and Bernd "Bernth" Brodträger (BELPHEGOR) along with Fabio Zperandio (OPHIOLATRY) throwing in a couple of guitar solos. DIVINE CODEX’s Black Metal is vicious, rancid and cold as fuck – and it rips through the air like zillions of black arrows targeted against their enemies, killing instantly. Even if this record seems to unleash its obscure, jet-black energy in pretty rapid outbursts for most of the time, there still are those more twisted, atmospheric and slower moments squeezed into the songs on "The Dark Descent" that provide a welcomed amount of variation for this opus to make it better to stand out. Music wise, DIVINE CODEX pound our worthless flesh in a sort of DARK FUNERAL fashion; at least they are the closest band comparison I could think of, although they are still relatively far away from copying them shamelessly. With a complex and intelligent songwriting that is nicely presented on "The Dark Descent", it’s obvious there’s lots of potential in DIVINE CODEX to become one of the most noteworthy, new Black Metal bands around, with a fair amount of luck naturally. "The Dark Descent" is a surprisingly well done record from the filthy hordes of DIVINE CODEX, definitely leaving a few favorable scars in people’s minds.
