Even in times like these with the internet and the possibility to produce your own CD without spending much money, it takes some bands a long time to unleash the first recordings to the hordes of the dark. The Swedish DIVISION VANSINNE is such a case. They started in 2008 already, but didn’t release anything until now. I can only guess about the reasons, but I presume the band took the time to really unfold, develop and grow. Indeed “Dimension Darkness” doesn’t sound like an album that was recorded over-hasty, since the songs are mature and well-hung. The musical direction of DIVISION VANSINNE is definitely back to the old school of extreme Metal, yet they manage the act of balance between more American Death and Scandinavian Black Metal. In some moments there even are hints on the melancholic Death Metal of the mid 1990s, as far as the guitar harmonies are concerned. So, all ingredients are there for a fine bloody menu of Death. But why does it not taste as delicious and bloody raw as I hoped, even after I tried for the sixth time? I think it is because “Dimension Darkness” is not raw enough anymore, but boiled until soft. In other words: the album sounds a little overambitious and overproduced, some more bloody rawness would have helped songs like ‘Goathorns Rising’ or ‘Flyende Under Solens Pest’ a lot. So there is nothing but ambivalence left. DIVISION VANSINNE are by far not bad, but they have too few barbs to really get me.
