DYSYLUMN is a duo from Lyon, formed by the vocalist / guitarist / bassist Sébastien Besson and the drummer Oliver Kaah. "Conceptarium" is their official debut (self-released in digipak CD format, limited to 100 copies, while Solar Asceticists Productions released it on tape), it’s also the only work of their discography since they started in 2010, with the exception of the self-titled EP in 2013. They play Death Metal with Black and Progressive Metal elements. After having read the tracklist and looked at the cover artwork, it’s pretty easy to understand that the mysterious deep space is the subject of their lyrical themes. While nowadays many bands seem to choose the path of Black / Death Metal, only few distance themselves from the same old frames. In fact it’s difficult to find clear similarities to other bands but I would find their musical influences in the post 2000’s era. What is just clear after the first track ‘Vide Spatial’ is that these are very good musicians with outstanding creativity: for example, the end of this song is marked by a syncopated rhythm that demonstrates how a bit of originality can easily work on standard structures. Aware of their skills, ‘Conceptarium’ is not technical just for the sake of it, but it’s enough balanced between complex and heavy patterns and atmospheric slow passages. This is not an easy-listening album, you probably need to play it more times to get into it. Although I appreciate the efforts on their compositions, I have to admit that there are some boring parts that don’t fulfill the whole work in an excellent way. But again, there are many positive aspects, like the excellent work of the drummer, that can be surely developed further in the future.
