The Terrorists from Eastfrisia are back! Who? I’m talking about EASTFRISIAN TERROR, of course! This five piece released their first sign of life last year with an EP called “Lever Dood As Slav” that featured three fine Death Grind tunes, sung in the Eastfrisian native slang. Now, one and a half years later, it’s time for more! It’s a full album this time, baptized “EasrfrisiApokalypse”. And the band doesn’t stray from their track. So, a fine and balanced blend of Death Metal and Grindcore is what you can expect, always with a wink. Still EASTFRISIAN TERROR mainly grunt in their slang, still they sing about Eastfrisia and still they are doing damn well in what they do! Maybe even a little better, since the album features songs that were a joy when played live. The studio version of ‘Lapskaus’ (a traditional North German speciality no one else in the world might eat…) is just a damn killer. And the funny ‘Mähdrescher Blues’ (“Corn harvester Blues”) and ‘Döspaddel’ (“twit” or “dunderhead”) rule as well. But before someone might think that EASTFRISIAN TERROR are a mere fun band – It’s definitely not like this! The five guys are deeply rooted in their home area and cover all aspects of Eastfrisia, the history as well as the typical clichés. So you’ll also find songs like ‘De Slagt Van Jemgum’ (“The battle of Jemgum”) or ‘De Quade Foelke’ (“Evil Foelke”), which deal with the history of an area that always tried to keep their independence in the days of old and their typical character in the present. And the music is either far from being fun music. As I already pointed out, EASTFRISIAN TERROR take the balancing act between Death Metal and Grindcore and master this act in a great manner. After an intro, the opener ‘Klaas Ohm’ (a special custom on the island of Borkum) is already a fine example for this, since it mainly grinds in more midtempo groove that reminds of AUTOPSY, but it is spiced with blastbeats of the fastest. In ‘Lapskaus’ Mr. Deichkot’s way of singing even reminds of the mighty Mr. Tardy, as well as he presents the genre-typical pig squealing. Musically, there are even more moments in the tradition of OBITUARY here, but some refreshing melodies as well. To me, this one is the definite highlight of “EastfrisiApokalypse”. With ‘De Quade Foelke’ and the title track, we have two more pretty diversified tunes that are more based on midtempo Grind and remind of older Austrian bands like DISHARMONIC ORCHESTRA. The title track even has a fine Thrash part. Despite the epic topic, ‘De Slagt Van Jemgum’ features a lot more blastbeats in harsh contrasts to parts that are grinding slowly. This is the most complex song on “EastfrisiApokalypse” for sure. The ‘Mähdrescher Blues’ is a short and not too serious song with ultra brutal parts and an end at highest speed. ‘Döspaddel’ – can there be a nicer way to tell that somebody is not too bright? Well, the song of this name surprises with moments that are close to be rocking and features a lot of those melodic guitars that are typical for EASTFRISIAN TERROR. The final new song is ‘Vleeslül’ – don’t ask me how that one translates, even my dad, who grew up with Plattdeutsch couldn’t help, since he isn’t from Eastfrisia. This song is close to the Austrian school of Grind once more, but also features some Thrash influences and the complete range of Mr. Deichkots vocals. Asides from the nine new songs, all the three songs from the “Lever Dood As Slav” EP are featured here as well. So if you missed that one, it’s not the end of the world. But be sure not to miss “EastfrisiApokalypse” if you are into good brutal music.
