Indulgence Over Abstinence Behind The Obsidian Veil

With distance, Mr. Rogga Johansson is the most active Death Metal musician around and involved or responsible for minimum ten currently active projects. I have deep respect for his work as people like him live and bleed for Death Metal and kept the scene active even before the old school Death Metal revival. Also he seems to fulfill some of his teenage Death Metal dreams nowadays, as he is hooking up with some of the most talented veterans of this genre to create some new music with an old school touch. For ECHELON he once again hooked up with Dave Ingram, his bandmate in DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN and surely known by every Voices reader for his brilliant work for British masters BENEDICTION and BOLT THROWER, before he moved from England to Denmark. As I am a fan of both British bands and also DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN had some nice tunes to offer, I was curious to hear what their new collaboration brings. The voice of Dave Ingram is still one of the best in Death Metal history with a high brand recognition and personally, I never get tired of listening to him so I try to focus more on the musical performance and my view is splitted here. Surely you cannot find an absolute bad release by Rogga, but the mass of releases and projects seem to make him suffer a bit in originality. Only a few of the songs are above average. Some nice grooves here, some nice solos there. Surely solid guitar work but hardly any material above average or even outstanding. Track six ‘Indulgence Over Abstinence Behind The Obsidian Veil’ is a really good song and contains some fine riffing and solos but the rest is only average or a bit above. Also the sound and production sounds more like a self-recorded demo release than a solid release with well-known members like Dave or Rogga. And Rogga often shows, that he can do it a lot better considering his work for RIBSPREADER, PAGANIZER or BONE GNAWER. Again, the material is not bad but the members should carefully consider, if it is worth to release every single song they ever wrote or simply pick the best tunes and save them for the next release of DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN. Collectors and lunatics might buy this output anyway but you will not miss anything groundbreaking by not buying it or waiting to get this one second hand on ebay some time later.
