EREB ALTOR return with album number nine, “Vargtimman”. As I missed out all their previous releases (shame on me), I was curious to finally check them out when I saw the advertising campaign of Hammerheart Records. Their material was described as Viking Metal, but I hear a lot more. It surely has a certain Viking edge but it’s a good mixture between melodic Death Metal / Viking Metal, enriched by a real good doze of classic and epic Heavy Metal. The band seems to have the same influences as INSOMNIUM or MOONSORROW. Old BATHORY and ENSLAVED got paired with epic Heavy Metal, similar to HAMMERFALL, but with far more Viking tunes in it. The compositions are on a high level and absolutely matured. The title track ‘Vargtimman’ offers some more doomy tunes, which also seem to be part of their older sound. Occasionally also some Black Metal tunes appear here and there and the mixture of all these sounds turned out really great and is definitely worth to check, not only for Viking and Folk fans. Also worth to mention is the fantastic and crystal clear production, combined with their fine sense for melodies or even hymns. Rounded off by a fitting cover artwork this album is definitely worth to check or even mandatory to check, if the mentioned bands are your preferred choices in music.
