Remnants Of Immortality

While thinking of Dutch Death Metal, there are bands like ASPHYX, PESTILENCE, GOREFEST and SINISTER coming to the mind of most people all of a sudden I guess. Others like maybe PENTACLE, DISSECT and especially ETERNAL SOLSTICE are still way too underrated and have never been able to step out of the shadow of their, well, more "popular" comrades and honestly, I simply don’t know why. After splitting up in 1997 and besides two 7" contributions in 2011 and 2013, "Remnants Of Immortality" marks the return as their 4th full length after 18 years. And let me tell you, this is a comeback I didn’t expect to be that good like it is indeed. The album starts with an impressive, atmospheric instrumental, that paves the way for over 30 minutes of pure and entertaining Death Metal. While some of their country mates obviously seem to release one and the same album since ages (SINISTER) or simply forgot how to write listenable music for non-music students (PESTILENCE) mastermind Ramon Soeterbroek simply composed catchy, yet skilled and memorable songs, enriched with absolutely fantastic guitar solos. Just listen to ‘Force Fed Suicide’ and you’ll get an impression of what I’m talking about. ETERNAL SOLSTICE neither sound typical Dutch nor do they carry that classic, brutal American Metal of Death for which dutchmen like SEVERE TORTURE, CENTURIAN and PYAEMIA have been famous for. It’s more of something in between, a perfect blend of both worlds, combined to a very unique sound. Only the doubled vocals remind me of a later Mr. Benton during his VITAL REMAINS duties, but that’s no negative aspect at all, as they really do justice to this great piece of brutal and heavy music. "Remnants Of Immortality" contains everything from thrashy riffing (‘Bleed For Me’) to dense / gloomy passages like in ‘Recipe For Death’ and ‘Extinction Debt’, from groovy mid-tempo parts to up-tempo excursions as well. But first and foremost it is a fantastic Death Metal album, that grows with each spin, You are able to explore even more details while listening to it over and over again. Boy, that guitar solos… Even though, I’d like to emphasize songs like ‘Force Fed Suicide’, ‘Recipe For Death’ and ‘Subconscious Burial Ground’, there’s no weak track on here and every self-respected Death Metal fan should support these dudes at their second awakening, so that they hopefully and finally earn their well-deserved attention and success.
