Dichotomy

Dark and doomy Black Metal with a Heavy Metal edge is what these Italians deliver with "Dichotomy". It is my first encounter with the band, and even after countless spins, I can’t really figure out what to think of it. Musically it is set up really well, the songs are written and performed quite nice, the musicianship is ace, and there are some good deliveries and impacts from the different instruments. There is good guitar riffing, clever melodic lines, good pace shifts and a lot of different things going on throughout the album. The bass is more or less handling the rhythm, and not making that much noise, though it is also hidden a tad under the massive wall of guitars. The drumming ever-changing from keeping the pace steady to technically sheenanigans. Just below and once in a while aligned with the guitars, we have the vocals, which also do a decent and fitting job. Though what I miss is some edge, something that grips me and takes me on a ride, it is a tad too nice and doesn’t really hit me any of the places, I would like music to hit me, be it Black Metal or something else. When you press play, the music starts to cruise, and 8 tracks and 40 minutes later, the music stops, and you are left behind with pretty much nothing besides the ride. As mentioned, the music is well written and performed, it just needs something to latch on to the listener, some edge, some outlaces, some emotion, some credibility, it simply becomes too nice and boring in the end.
