I really love the "Morbidious Pathology" demo / EP (1990) and the "Omen Of Masochism" EP (’91) / MCD (’93) but didn’t like anything GOREAPHOBIA has released after their hiatus. "Apocalyptic Necromancy" is their second full-length and somehow I was really curious how they would sound this time. Mainly because Dark Descend is a killer label which truly stands for high quality stuff. But "Apocalyptic Necromancy" really didn’t convince me. I guess the band is not sure if they should play Death Metal, Black Metal, Thrash Metal or just trying to play some VENOM riffs. Mixing different styles is not a crime, of course. But this is just a collection of different songs which don’t harmonize well together. The album has not the feeling, not the atmosphere of a unit. Sure the musicians are all veterans and they surely know how to handle their instruments. So the songs are well executed and you can hear that the band consists of skilled musicians. The production is great and sounds really cool. Mr Gamble delivered a wide range of different vocal styles on this album, but to be honest I don’t like just one of them. He sounds way too much like a Black Metal vocalist for my personal taste. I guess GOREAPHOBIA just wanted too much while composing this album. I would advise them to just concentrate on what they can do best. Listen to "Morbidious Pathology" or "Omen Of Masochism" and you know what that is. "Apocalyptic Necromancy" is really not a bad album but it isn’t a good one either. A friend of mine totally loves "Apocalyptic Necromancy" so maybe I’m just the wrong person to do this review. www.myspace.com/goreaphobia, www.darkdescent.net
