The Belgian Black Metal scene might be overshadowed by the mighty ENTHRONED, but other bands are to be discovered if you dig a little deeper. GRIMFAUG for example are a young outfit from the Flemish part of the country who deliver a very harsh form of black aggression. All the typical ingredients of an underground release are presents here: black and white cover, corpse paints, tortured logo and no less tortured music. GRIMFAUG are visibly and audibly not too fond of the nicer aspects of life, at least on record. I found out strong similarities with a band like GORGOROTH here (and this is a compliment I can assure you), in the sense GRIMFAUG recorded this album without caring too much about their sound, and deliver an extremely raw material. The songs contain no more than two riffs each time, and they could sound monotonous in the long term. But (because there is a but of course), the overall result is a damn fine effort, faithful in its spirit to the scene of old. The music flows out the speakers like a menacing and cold mist, the perfect atmosphere for long evenings in autumn and winter. My only complaints concern the percussion sound, the cymbals are mixed too much upfront comparatively to the drums themselves, and this could cause annoyance after a while, especially if you consider that the pacing is on the fast mode all the time. GRIMFAUG obviously need to gain some maturity before they could be considered as entirely convincing. But they show promising elements enough to be checked out.
