Emerging from the very depths of Mexico, being reduced to a two-man band after their debut "Venganza" released in 2005 HACAVITZ are once again back to transfer the spirit of the late eighties / early nineties to the next millenium. Anyone who is searching for new ideas, modern elements or whatever within the Death / Black Metal genre might switch over to another review, but all who still love the harsh, rough sound delivered back in those days should take a listen. As the bands states on their homepage "the lines between Death and Black Metal run thick yet thin", everyone who is interested in categorizing band into different styles, should do this work on his / her own, because I am not going to discuss such a topic. "Katun" features simple, yet aggressive and dark, gloomy riffing, reminding of early MORBID ANGEL tunes and the vocals seem to be right out of the grave. The drummer is quite excellent, he can match up with other high-class Metal drummer, but at every time the drums are serving the music, no affectation like MAYHEM, where the drums are just to dominant (although Hellhammer is really a Hellhammer, but the drums are just to much in the foreground, destroying al lot of atmosphere). Concerning the sound – well, if you are only used to listen to nowadays high-end productions your ears might bleed, but all others who know such sounds and liked it back in the ancient past will definitely pleased with an superb old school Death / Black Metal album like "Katun". http://cehacavitz.com
