HACAVITZ’s Antimo Buonnano (bass, guitars & vocals) and Oscar Garcia (drums) will always remain heroes in my book, because these gentlemen (among others) were responsible for RAVAGER who released the supreme "Storm Of Sin". An album so twisted, so aggressive and with the impact of an atomic bomb. But how about HACAVITZ? Well, you can clearly discover similarities in DNA in both of them. The extremity and speed are the main key and in some tunes, the complexity is familiar. Those who still don’t have a clue, HACAVITZ spawns epic and apocalyptic riffing, harsh screaming vocals, kind of like David Vincent on "Altars Of Madness" and pulverizing drums. With "Metztli Obscura", being their third full-length after "Venganza" from 2005 and "Katun" from 2007, the band still walk their path of old school Death Metal from the late eighties. The production is the same as their previous records, yet slightly better, with the typical very much up front snare drumsound and rough distorted guitars. It wouldn’t surprise me if people mistake this for Black Metal because of the production and certain riffstructures. Antimo comes up with a lot of cool riffs and it’s remarkable that he is responsible for guitars and bass on his own! One thing that I dislike is the returning technique of hitting a few single notes of a chord. After being used in a few songs this method tends to weaken the ability to distinguish songs from one another. Actually they start to make it sound the same and it even becomes boring. Maybe it’s a Mexican cultural thing that justifies this technique since I heard this on the latest albums of INFINITUM OBSCURE and THE CHASM as well. Anyway, it’s just a minor flaw. Oscar’s drumming is again outstanding! Like the Mexican Hellhammer. Ranging from whirlwind blasting, agressive midtempos to powerful slower parts with a great technical capacity freed from any superfluous elements. The warhammer like battery of IMPIETY can be a comparison. Lyrics deal about Aztecan myhology, darkness and death with some in Spanish. This is a real veminous killer and because it’s complex instead of catchy it will need a few spins to reveal its power.
