With HELLCRAFT, we have a Ukrainian band that already is around for a decade now. The core of the band consists of singer Pylyp Makarenko, aka Fill, and guitar player Roman Dankovsky, who uses the at least a little inartfully chosen pseudonym Rommel. Both are also active in PUS LACTATION. With “Apotheosis Of War”, HELLCRAFT released their third album this year. Since I haven’t heard their previous works yet, I can fully concentrate on the new record here. And what I hear is Death Metal. Nothing but pure Death Metal played the old continental European way and with passion. Of course HELLCRAFT don’t reinvent the genre here, but the songs on “Apotheosis Of War” are rather fine. If you’re likely to dig a mix of SINISTER, older GOREFEST and MASSACRA, refined with a little MORBID ANGEL or CANNIBAL CORPSE, songs like ‘The Repentance Through The Pain’, ‘Mass Burial Place’, ‘Degeneration Process’ or the title track are definitely for you. And if there would have been two or three more songs in the quality of the closing mid tempo smasher ‘When The Sun Goes Out’, I might have given more kudos for HELLCRAFT. Personally, I think that the album might have sounded a little better with a more rough and analogous recording, but still we have a solid, yet not too spectacular Death Metal album that will for sure not be a mispurchase.
