I know that Frediablo is involved in a multitude of musical projects (NECROPHAGIA and GRIMFIST being the most famous), but it is the first time I am exposed to one of his creations, the case in point being the band / project HEMNUR. What can I say? “Satanic Hellride” is maybe a cool album, but for sure offers little in term of freshness. In fact, the flood of Black Metal bands coming from the Great White North becomes a little annoying right now; it seems everybody feels the urge to be involved in the most possible of projects, exploring the faint “nuances” separating a given style from another one. While listening to “Satanic Hellride” it quickly appears that we face a very relaxed form of Black Metal (Black’ Roll as the promo babbling names it), an impression reinforced by the cover art of the album, depicting our man Frediablo seated in a black limo (Christine?) in front of the legendary Norman Bates motel. The overall production, fat and greasy, helps to digest the very banal Black Metal offered on this platter. All the mandatory ingredients are here: “freaky” samples, harsh shrieks (with some Attila Csihar – like effects here and there) and basic chords, to the point this effort bored me to death very fast. The only point of interest is that Frediablo manages to approximate the Tom Warrior’s guitar style on some occasions, but it is not enough to grab the attention of any well-seasoned Black Metal fanatic used to all the tricks of the game. This is a rushed disc to me, cool to listen to once, but not more. I almost forgot that Frediablo is accompanied here by a woman, Heksblod (oh well…), responsible for co-producing and for playing synths. www.infernusrex.com.
