Fury And Death

The fact I like the most about Australian Metal is, not only the undeniable quality of their bands, but its variety. And KING adds to that diversity with a furious, yet well controlled burst of Death Metal with a lot of Black Metal influence. Sometimes it is hard to describe these combinations of Metal subgenres, since not all of us fans have the same notion or the same parameters to tag a band as a specific type of music. But let me try. KING offers a very distinct approach, combining very musical slow segments that reminded me of the early works of Scandinavian bands such as TIAMAT and NAGLFAR with vicious and hyper fast Black Metal parts. Guitarist Dave Hill has a talent for effortlessly merging open chords and arpeggios that suggest epic, vast dead landscapes and intense tremolo riffs that add a violent edge to their style. Vocalist Tony Forde pushes upscales the already dynamic music providing a fierce and constant layer that binds everything. The atmosphere of “Fury And Death” is perfectly translated into music via the compelling songwriting. The album features a modern production, but also has that raw and menacing bite that draws the listener into an ample and diverse experience. The vocals definitively kick you in the face first; mid-pitched yells and screams (and some grunts) that go hand in hand with the assortment of styles displayed here. The drums lack organic feel but they have enough punch to support the music with detailed and constant tempo changes. Bass lines that mostly follow the guitar riffs. Yet with such a solid rhythm section, the guitars fill in the rest of the sonic spectrum with a thick and crispy tone. Add to that a well done balanced mix and you have a winner. Finally, the mastering is pushed a bit too much for my liking. But that is a nuance I keep finding in almost every album recorded in modern days. So please pay no attention to this old fart. “Fury And Death” is an album that offers a wide array of extreme music. It also showcases the development that KING has had after their first and second albums (released in 2016 and 2019 respectively) it is the next logical step to solidify their identity and style.
