MEFISTO
The Truth

After an almost never-ending delay this classic material finally was re-issued on CD and vinyl (ltd. to 500 copies!). Don’t know why it took so incredibly long, but I couldn’t care less as the result certainly makes up for everything. The packaging is highly impressive – the CD comes in a completely black jewel case, just with the golden (!) printed MEFISTO symbol on the front. The booklet is designed like an old book with a leather sleeve and (next to some obscure and mystic graphics) has all the lyrics. And the music?! Well, if you’re not familiar with MEFISTO yet, you’ve probably either been to young or to ignorant when these Swedish dudes started out. You might have noticed L.G. from ENTOMBED wearing a MEFISTO shirt on an older photosession, but that’s another story… I first discovered the band in the by now classic issue # 5 of SLAYER MAG in 1987. At the time they already had two demos out: "Megalomania" (which was recorded in May’86) and "The Puzzle" (which already was about to follow six months later) and were the only extreme Metal band from Sweden next to BATHORY. But while the latter made it pretty big, MEFISTO always remained total underground as they never got the opportunity to record an album. This release here, "The Truth", unfortunately ain’t an album in the true sense of the word either as it "just" combines the band’s two aforementioned demos. But that’s a really cool idea to me as the sound quality is pretty good and their style still very unique fifteen years after the original release of those tapes. MEFISTO played a mainly midpaced form of Death / Thrash with raw vocals and incredibly skilled lead guitar work. Eight songs in total, with a playing time of approx. 45 minutes, will take you on a journey back in time, back to a period in that bands like SLAUGHTER LORD, OBSCURITY, NECRODEATH, MORBID, INSANITY etc. still ruled the underground! Essential (and not only for nostalgic reasons)!
