Yes, this is secretiveness in its finest form: absolutely no information can be gathered about this band. MIDNIGHT CALLINGS have neither any homepage, nor a facebook page. No one knows anything about the number of band members, let alone their names. It even seems to be a mistake that the label page disclosed the fact that MIDNIGHT CALLINGS are from Germany. So I can only tell you one fact: “Pilgrims Of The Black Hole” is MIDNIGHT CALLINGS’ second album after the strictly limited untitled debut. So let’s concentrate on the music here. And the four long songs speak for themselves. From the icy wind in the intro of the fast and furious title track, “Pilgrims Of The Black Hole” is frosty Black Metal in its trvest form. Simple, sometimes even close to primitive riffing combined with fragmentary harmony and melody lines, the album sounds lo-fidelity to unproduced and yet cold as hell. Despite the length of the songs, too much varying is not the way of this band. Instead, a certain monotony seems to be both a trademark and a stylistic device that makes MIDNIGHT CALLINGS what they are. But this is by far not as boring as it sounds – on contrary, somehow this pitch black lump of ice is quite fascinating. Especially the quite viscous ‘Bleak’ knows how to obscure any light, while the pretty odd ‘Dust’ is really heavy food. The already mentioned ‘Pilgrims Of The Black Hole’ and ‘Where The Ravens Rests’ (sic!) are more on the conventional black side, yet these two are pretty fine and fitting examples for the black way MIDNIGHT CALLINGS walk. Even though there are moments when the lo-fi sound is really demanding, the overall impression of “Pilgrims Of The Black Hole” is a surprisingly positive one.
