This Finnish sextet is quite a young band (founded in 1999), and comes up with a very fine first release. Their label draw parallels with CHILDREN OF BODOM and SOILWORK regarding their style, but I can’t help but to find this description pretty inaccurate. Instead, I can say that MORS PRINCIPIUM EST own a heavy debt to the melodic Death Metal spawned in Gothenburg back in the mid 90s especially by DARK TRANQUILLITY. For instance, as soon as the first track came out of my speakers, I heard strong Maiden-esque mannerisms like those we could find on the classic “The Gallery” album for instance. So, elegance and finesse are the keywords when speaking about “Inhumanity”. This album is full of delicate harmonies and superb keyboards interventions, complimented by an excellent rhythm section. that MORS PRINCIPIUM EST know how to vary their song, alternating outbursts of speed with more relaxed moments, but always keeping the energy factor at the highest. The vocals are typical of the Scandinavian bands in favor these days and in that department I agree they could remind SOILWORK ones. On some occasions that MORS PRINCIPIUM EST come even close to a more brutal form of melodic Hard Rock, and this add to the majesty of some compositions (‘The Lust Called Knowledge’ is a good example of what I try to explain here). And just listen to ‘Last Apprentice’ and you could even swear Malmsteen put a hand in its composition! Add to this an over the top production (“Inhumanity” was recorded in the legendary Tico-Tico studio, I think you can guess what to expect then) and you will understand that MORS PRINCIPIUM EST offer us something very special with this offering. It is maybe too soon to make predictions regarding the future of the band, but I am sure that MORS PRINCIPIUM EST could surprise us even more with their next release, if only they keep their style and doesn’t lose themselves into sterile experimentation’s. In that regard, the last track of “Inhumanity” (‘Into Illusion’) is a indication of what they should not do again, because this track is the weakest of an otherwise excellent offering. Give MORS PRINCIPIUM EST a fair chance, and I guess you will agree with me: they are for sure very promising!
