NAZGHOR
Infernal Aphorism
(Non Serviam Records)

Welcome back blazingly cold melodic Swedish Black / Death Metal. NAZGHOR is a band that has jumped back to the golden time of said style from the Swedish scene from the mid-nineties to the mid-zeroes. The band was formed in 2012 in Uppsala and has since between quite active recording and releasing albums. This is their sixth full length album since then, quite impressive, as all the releases are quite strong, none the less displaying much of the same. This new release on Non Serviam Records, the first release on a real label, is somewhat more aggressive and more in your face, compared to the former, especially if you compare it to the last album "Death’s Withered Chants" which I have been listening a good deal to. The production is also more compressed and in your face, which also adds to the aggressiveness and intensity. A tad more air between the instruments and a tad more organic feel wouldn’t have bothered me, especially as the lead guitars and drums fight quite hard, about the same space once in a while. The guys are quite good at writing tunes. And the melodies, damn the melodies, they work so well, and drive the songs forward and paint the atmospheres, and tie it all together. It is quite enjoyable to listen to such good guitar work and so well made melodies, and to how they are intertwined in the musical universe of NAZGHOR. I think it is quite good for the band that Ricardo from Non Serviam has picked them up, as it’ll broaden the exposure and open some new doors along the way. "Infernal Aphorism" is a quite strong album that deserves some attention, especially as the cold dark Winter nights are coming nearer. A quite well made soundtrack for those.
