OLD FOREST, one of the UK’s longest-running Black Metal bands, returns with their ninth studio album, “Graveside”. Formed back in 1998 and being reformed again in 2007 after few years of hiatus, OLD FOREST assuredly stamped their legacy in the Black Metal genre with their ever-growing discography echoing their visions on fantasy, death, mysticism and native folklore of Sussex. And following up their active approach, this release blends the raw intensity of early ’90s Black Metal with a more melodic and melancholic style, creating a distinctive sound. The album opening instantaneously establish that with ‘Curse Of Wampyr’ and the following ‘Witch Spawn’. Both numbers showcasing Kobold’s dynamic vocals shrieking intensity paired with occasional clean passages that add depth. While the music is undeniably melodic, it retains a gritty, underground feel reminiscent of the genre’s second wave, drawing comparisons to DARKTHRONE, EMPEROR, as well as their own debut, “Into The Old Forest”. What sets “Graveside” apart is its ability to balance melody with rawness without sounding forced. The production embraces imperfections, creating an engrossing listening experience that feels alive. Other following tracks as ‘Solstice Sacrifice’, ‘Interment Of Ashes’, ‘Decrepit Melancholy’ and ‘Halfway Human’, thrive on with their ability to blend old school magic with fresh ideas, that feels both familiar and innovative. Moments of slower, bass-heavy grooves and unexpected acoustic breaks also display the band’s versatility and willingness to experiment within the genre. Altogether “Graveside” can be seen as one of OLD FOREST’s strongest works to date, capturing the spirit of Black Metal, while avoiding modern clichés. It is surely a refreshing homage to the genre’s roots, which should resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
