Sometimes I’m not sure what I’m listening to. The music doesn’t always fit comfortably in a particular genre, which is normally fine and a breath of fresh air. But in the case of PATH 11, I felt myself confused and weary. Seventy two minutes of confusion isn’t a good thing either. From the album opener ‘A New Direction Of Life’, where the vocalist yells then coughs, I knew I was in for something different. Acoustic melodies mixed with Death Metal riffs and vocals, and back to more acoustic melodies, then lengthy meandering songs… My brain couldn’t really process any of this. The second track ‘Notion Of Emptiness’ kicks into more heavy surroundings and I let out a sigh of relief. But wait. Dammit. The acoustic guitars and clean singing suddenly appear. It almost sounds like someone is snoring at the slow, acoustic beginning of ‘Hush’, which is fitting. Or is that me snoring? The album plods on through four more tracks of some Death Metal, even a little Black Metal, a little progressive musings, whispering vocals and back and forth, back and forth. Over an hour later at the album’s end, I wasn’t sure how the rest of my day would go. Having said all of this… The band knows how to play their instruments. They ARE talented. And when the vocals are Death Metal, it’s right on the money. But a little more focus in getting to the point of each song would definitely help matters.
