PENTAGRAM are definitely among the pioneering extreme Metal bands not only in South America but worldwide. The quartet has been around for nearly four decades, since 1985, to be precise, but always remained deep in the underground, mainly because they broke up in 1992 to return in 2009. This long break also is the reason that it was not until 2013 that their first full length album “The Malefice” was released, meanwhile under the moniker PENTAGRAM CHILE out of respect to the famous Doom Metal band from the US. In their early demo days, they delivered some fine raw Thrash Metal on the edge of (Proto) Death Metal. It was bands like SLAYER, POSSESSED and CELTIC FROST who left their mark on the sound of PENTAGRAM. And this hasn’t changed over the years, neither on “The Malefice” nor on the second album “Eternal Life Of Madness” that was just released via Listenable Records. PENTAGRAM CHILE also resisted the temptation to change their sound into a more modern one. This means that “Eternal Life Of Madness” is as old-fashioned as it gets. And that’s a really fine thing in my humble opinion. From the first riff of ‘El Imbunche’, we get a journey back into times when Thrash Metal was the latest thing in Metal. Yet this album is not one of those “Harder, Faster, Louder” albums. Instead, PENTAGRAM CHILE focused on variable and balanced songwriting with a subtle dose of old fashioned Metal. The result is of course not groundbreaking, it is even better: A very fine and timeless extreme Metal album that pleases any old geezer like me. Songs like the SLAYER-esque ‘The Portal’, ‘Omniscient Tyrant’ with its great harmonic leads or the quite complex ‘Devourer Of Life’, just to name a few, are really worth your time. My personal favourite is the final ‘No One Shall Survive’, a nod to early SLAYER and CELTIC FROST in the best possible way. So, if you feel addressed by my name dropping or love old fashioned extreme Metal in general, don’t waste time and visit www.facebook.com/pentagramchile1985 or www.facebook.com/listenablerecs
