Spanish Black Metal has always been a funny size, not that many bands making a lot of noise, though a good deal trying to. The ones getting through the loop at the labels and getting released have usually been mediocre copies of Scandinavian styled furious and melodic Black Metal, where the dirty and mean, with a touch of their own, underground never really have risen. PRIMIGENIUM has some of their own, they’ve been around since 1994 and have had time to built their own identity and on ”Faith Through Anguish” they’re delivering some good and solid Metal with a good atmosphere and feel. The riffing is dark with a good melodic touch that drives the music forward and captures the listener. The rhythm section is quite effective, blasting one moment in a furious chaos, to calm down the next to create a dooming dawn. PRIMIGENIUM is playing really well on the atmospheric part of the release and showcases some great and working songwriting. This is dark and disturbing. The keyboards used now and then, very subtle in the background is also a nice touch to create the exact right atmosphere for the moment and track. The vocals deserves a mention as well, all from the usual grim Black Metal rasping to the clean reverb-smeared massing to the more clean spoken word like pieces, all fitting for the used moments, well done. I didn’t really know what to expect when I pressed play on this release, but have been somewhat positive surprised, a wholehearted blast of atmospheric and dark Black Metal, captivating and disturbing, brutal and well not so much pretty, even though the band shows that side as well, once in a while. A band with many facets, and a good base to progress from. The music might become a tad repetitive along the way, though as a whole I like it and will continue to give it some spins, a solid release.
