If someone thinks that Heavy Metal and all of its incarnations are a very limited and narrow form of musical expression, then that individual knows nothing about music. The fact that the main core of a Rock or Metal band is the same since a few decades, does not means that it can be added with a lot more of elements. Also, it allows for the use of many vocal styles, tempos and overall atmospheres. Hence it has been compared more to the way classical musical is done. Still, said all those words, this does not mean that such kind of experimentations are always very good. The Belgian band SERCATI, formed in 2009 presents in this, its second full length some of that spirit that Metal can be a lot of things. It has very atmospheric parts where it can be related to an obscure movie soundtrack, there are also many dramatic passages, and even some music that can be related to some sort of old-drunken sailor’s celebrating a bloody victory. So far, so good. But then, after passing the initial impression, there are still, for us who are not so open minded Metallers, many details that will make this to be just a good first impression band, but not that much. The guitars are way lower than what I like my Metal to be. The vocals are also a very weak Black Metal voice without adding anything to the music. For once, I like the drums and the bass playing is quite competent, and the strange way of composing and making the music by cleverly using melody is a good point. But then the overall final result is less memorable than I expected. Fans of atmospheric Black (early GEHENNA) or Death Metal (early AMORPHIS) will surely like it, and I am even sure some Heavy / Power Metal fans will like it.
