The Turkish band SERMON was founded in 1997 in Izmir. In the same year, they released their first demo “Cosmic Prisoner”, and two years later released their second demo “Sea Of Meanings” on the Yucel Music label. Although started with some promising feedback and support from the Turkish underground, the band broke up in 2004. After long remaining dormant for 17 years, in 2021, Cem Barut (the only original member of SERMON) reformed the band with Durmuş Kalın. They started working on new songs and included Harun Altun (from FORGOTTEN, another Turkish Doom / Death band) on vocals to record the new album. And their persistence paid off, as “Till Birth Do Us Part”, the band’s debut album, will be available to get a blended taste of Doom and Death Metal added with the inherent mysticism and darkness from the enchanting land. Though their debut album, but the band has been around for quite a long time and the results come out as massive and heavy Doom / Death Metal, which is characterized by atmospheric, depth and intensity. From the beginning with the track ‘Posthumous’, to the upcoming ‘Flawless Entropy’, ‘Destined To Decline’ and ‘Gnostic Dissensus’, solid songwriting strength will be evident throughout the album length. The guitar riffs come with darkening melodies and transitions with tempo changes will keep the listeners possessed. The addition of new vocals and his deliverance like a deep force added further epiceness to the record that this genre demands. Surely the production brings an atmosphere reminiscent of ENTOMBED and PARADISE LOST which can surely makes the record buzz in the head long after the record ends. With all these, SERMON made a statement comeback and should be lauded heavily for their endurance and craftmanship. “Till Birth Do Us Part” will be available to have that experience via Bitume label as well as on Bandcamp and the streaming platforms.
