SURGERY
Living Dead

As far as I can recall this is my first experience with SURGERY and they have been around since 2010. I apologize but also right off the top of my head, one of the first bands that I’ve heard hailing from Slovakia. I am sure I have before, but none come to mind at the moment. So, on to the release at hand. If you can get past the slightly juvenile demo-ish cover art, you can be in for a bit of a treat. Immediately on first listens the band reminds me of JUNGLE ROT and a bit of GUTTED (one of my all-time faves from the late nineties). The production is spot on, with plenty of catchy galloping riffs that match the drums in a sort of death groove. Case in point, the middle section in track # 6 ‘Death In You’ is a good representation. Overall the band has the songs and feel locked down tight. If you are familiar with the bands mentioned above, you gotta know that sound and gotta love it. Plus you can hear the bass too, a definite plus in my book. On further listens, I am also getting hints of BOLT THROWER and early SEVERE TORTURE. Just listen to the title track ‘Living Dead’ when it kicks in and immediately it sets the tone for the rest of the album. Yeah, it’s a tad samey, yeah, it’s been done before, but its done well. I have mentioned this in some of my past reviews about short runtimes for albums being better. So songs are quick to the point and just give you a hit to the head. No time wasters here and I like that. One plus is that I see myself playing this more than just once. So if you looking for a good catchy stomper take a listen. Also I can imagine much of the material going over extremely well in a live setting. www.facebook.com/surgery.poprad, www.facebook.com/greatdanerecords
