Progressive Obsoletion

When I heard the band name my first thought was that it must be a Thrash Metal band. And already the first notes of the Greeks’ second album ”Progressive Obsoletion” make clear where the journey is heading. However the instrumental opener ‘Into Trepidation’ sounds more like SLAYER in the times of “Seasons In The Abyss”, while the rest of the album tends more towards NUCLEAR ASSAULT. Aggressive Thrash Metal with songwriting that reminds with its choppy breaks more of Hardcore outfits than of other Thrash Metal sub-genres. The hoarsely barked vocals underline this impression, even if there is an attempt to sing properly at one point or another. Interestingly the songs are not that short as one might suggest, nine songs in three quarters of an hour, with ‘Deceiving The Psychopompos’ and its seven minutes as the longest song. Maybe that is the only criticism, namely that you can not distinguish individual songs and can listen to it from beginning to end without being able to say how many songs you actually heard. On the other hand, there is no boredom either, VIOLENT DEFINITION approaches the matter with much power and joy of playing. I like this album especially because it is a more than welcome change from the Black Thrash Metal that has been flooding the scene for years.
