Hailing from the same region near the Gulf of Bothnia as one of the forerunners of Finnish Black Metal madness IMPALED NAZARENE, stand VONÜLFSRËICH strong with their fourth full length album “Kvensgäldr”. An album released by the Polish label Fallen Temple, a label that has begun to have a hefty repertoire under their belt. VONÜLFSRËICH has taken their inspiration from the second wave of Black Metal, with healthy hints to the good old days, and the band has from the beginning taken me right back to the late nineties and start 00es of Finnish Black Metal, with the dark sound, catchy cold atmospheres and possessed vocals. The songs are well crafted, based around strong guitar riffs, an almost groovy and catchy rhythm and the possessed vocals. The variations strayed out on the album, as furious blast beat moments, tantalizing melodic pieces, chanting vocals Fenriz style as in ‘Several Moons Ago’ and all in between, makes “Kvensgäldr” a strong album. The band is moving further around stylistic than before, and that suits them, even though I still find “Ragnarök Rising” their strongest output so far. Though I haven’t given “Kvensgäldr” that many spins yet, so it’ll might get there. VONÜLFSRËICH started out in 2013 and has a massive back catalogue of EPs and demos behind them and a single full length from 2017, before Fallen Temple entered the game, since then things have progressed and we got the latest three full lengths the last two years, which isn’t a bad thing as the band is delivering some good darkness and is, yet a solid proof of the Finnish Black Metal scene is thriving these days. When I had the initial listen to this album, I couldn’t help myself thinking of “Fist Of The Northern Destroyer” from the mighty CLANDESTINE BLAZE and “The Beherial Midnight” from the brutalizing BAPTISM and was taken back to 2002, though being inspired by such powerful entities isn’t shameful.
