“Ultra Violence” is WOLVES OF PERDITION’s sophomore album following their 2021 debut. After the first listen, I can’t think of a better title for this release. It is violent, rabid and ferocious. There are obvious influences in their music, but they have managed to come up with an album that hits you constantly and relentlessly on its own, without sounding like a copy. First off, there is no denying the modern production values. The treble heavy guitar tone sits perfectly between the (surprisingly) deep bass guitar tone and the massive drum sound. The mix has both crisp highs and some boosted mid lows that enhance the usual range for this style of music but also adds low, solid bass frequencies. It’s a heavy, dense and in your face album, meant to be played loud. Hence the well balanced mix and the (really) loud mastering. I mean, watch your volume when playing this one for the first time. Little piece of advice out of experience. Now, guitar players Hellpriest and The End churn out a plethora of melodic riffs, creepy yet beautiful melodies and well thought leads. The guitars blend really nicely with each other and with Varjo’s solid bass guitar and excellent vocals. He mixes his usual high pitched shrieks with low and deep grunts that adjust perfectly to the varied atmospheres and parts in each song found here. Last but not least, drummer Khal’Uzi 666 pounds his way through the album with solid surgical breaks and well placed cymbal hits. His drum work is both, amazingly fast when playing blast beats and solid when the band slows down for those ethereal moments. WOLVES OF PERDITION are not inventing this style of music. But they are playing it with conviction and the right attitude. “Ultra Violence” showcases the best of their creativity and it builds on their identity as the band develops.
