A long time ago… and I mean a very long time in the early 90s (1991 to be exact). A promising band was born in Stockholm, Sweden and its name was / is THERION, and while this review is not about this band, it’s 100% associated to it, so I needed to make this statement, anyway. THERION recorded their fabulous debut album at the end of 1990 and it was released in February 1991. While the release was in progress, Christofer Johnsson gathered his 2 THERION pals Lars Rosenberg (from ENTOMBED fame too) and Piotr Wawrzeniuk and entered the studio in January 1991 to record the debut album of their side project CARBONIZED. While their primary band was doing basic Death Metal, CARBONIZED was born to deliver a punishing grinding attack with a twist, rooted in Death Metal but with progressions and non-stop grind sections. “For The Security” is not an easy album to digest even to this day, so I will try to break it down the best way I can: Do you like NAPALM DEATH and TERRORIZER? Wanted the 2 early CARCASS albums to be larger and more complex? Missed the drone vocals and weird music patterns of the CYNIC debut? Add some classic Swedish Death Metal riffing and voilá! The result is “For The Security”. Now going back to what is really essential here is the sound of the album, its unbelievable clear for the time it was recorded, also as you might think based on what was said before, the running time of this album is below the 30 minutes mark, making it a strong and direct statement of un-common Death Metal. The lyrics are all about life misery and social problems but with a technology / security topic which gives another point to the particular sound and idea of this record. To wrap this up I would say this title is a hunting gem for all the Swedish records collectors, and prices goes up to 100 USD+ for this CD on ebay. But Vic Records had the excellent idea of re-releasing this masterpiece of its own genre and make it available again, and on top of that even added the 2 tracks of the band’s “untitled” demo from 1990.
