Re-awaking the gods, yet an blasting attack of old school Death Metal straight to my face. This time we are heading to Germany and this band’s first demo release "Death Evoked", 4 tracks of utterly rotten Death Metal from the netherworld. Countless bands have found back to the Death Metal sound of the early 90s, the old reeking brutality packed in a not too thick sound with a lot of dark atmosphere, melodic yet brutal riffing and mid- to doomy paces. A bit chaotic song structures and a depraved puked growl. Where many of said bands fail, is by having a top notch production that screams 2010 instead of 1992, old school Death Metal packed in a shiny sterile and clean box just isn’t as charming as a noisy, raw and dirty production that fits the music. I can’t blame CHAPEL OF DISEASE for a clean production, their stink of the early 90s, nice and raw, fitting their depravity perfectly. Their dirty riffing mixed up with thin and cold melodic leads, their pounding rhythm patterns, the gnarly bass and the insane growl, all fitted together, churning into a hellish combination. My fave track on the demo, the 8 minute basher ‘The Loved Dead’ starting out with a trademark cold thrashing riff, getting slowly into gears with a good growl and slowly picking up pace from the doomy beginning into a feast of all what CHAPEL OF DISEASE offers, a tour de force of doomy Death Metal with a brutal grinding twist that holds a truly dark and disturbed atmosphere all the way through. I’ve sold my soul to these 4 Germans, "Death Evoked" hooked onto me almost immediately and kept growing for each listen, a gem of a Death Metal recording and one I’ll return to a lot this year, that’s for certain! Now I just have to wait until July when they’ll release their next recording, a split 7" with LIFELESS, even though CHAPEL OF DISEASE’s offering is a remastered track from the demo, though I reckon the boys have more coming our way sooner than later! http://chapel-of-disease.jimdo.com, www.fda-records.com
