When interviewed, a member or members of a band will say that South American countries are among their favorite to play because the fans are crazier, the shows sicker, and in some regions, it’s as though the 80s are still here. So they say anyway. One reason why such things are said is because bands such as CHEMICIDE, from San Jose, Costa Rica, outclass their North American relatives in everything from sound, song, even sheer spirit. Borrowing heavily from, but not limited to, Germany’s immortal Thrash bands (KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, etc.) this Costa Rican quartet pound out potently aggressive Thrash with touches of spacey-sci-fi sounds like Canada’s VOIVOD. And very unlike the oftentimes hilariously bad Thrash bands from the United States, CHEMICIDE have killer solos. Track two, ‘Thrash Will Conquer’, has a phenomenal, melodic-without-being-wimpy solo. Straight on its heels, ‘Biochemical Disaster’ starts off with an explosive face-melt solo, followed by interesting riffs and more of the previously mentioned guitar solo magic. By this time at ‘Biochemical Disaster’, the vocalist has gone from sounding somewhat like Mille Petrozza to Martin Missy. So there’s something for KREATOR and PROTECTOR fans (though I think most people like both – they should)! Picking a favorite song is tough, and I am honestly unsure if I can. This demo is simply too good for cherry picking. Side B begins with ‘Attack The Church’, a seven-minute song, quite ambitious – for any band, not just a young one. Besides, CHEMICIDE nail it again. ‘Attack The Church’ has more of the alien spaceship sound like VOIVOD and another great melody like the one in ‘Thrash Will Conquer’. Earlier I said I was unsure if I could pick a favorite, but the more I listen to this demo, ‘War For Possessions’ emerges as the wickedest from start to finish. This demo is an absolute ripper, and worth your attention.
