It often happens that several contributers sign up for an album, usually for well-known bands. I was all the more surprised that this also happened for CORPUS OFFAL, which was unknown to me at least. So I quickly listened to their two-song demo from last year and indeed, it sounds promising. With their self-titled debut, CORPUS OFFAL have even exceeded the expectations. Three quarters of the members of the Texas based band were or are active in other bands, the most famous of which is probably CEREBRAL ROT. And indeed a lot of the malicious, rotten and rancid style of CEREBRAL ROT rears its severed head in the seven songs. But there is still more to discover. Besides the versatile snarling, gargling, grunting and screaming vocals plus the down tuned guitars and the changes of speed we have different influences. My Death Metal senses notice some bloody dripping raw slices of OBITUARY, BENEDICTION, BOLT THROWER, AUTOPSY and PUNGENT STENCH. Of course the very early works of the mentioned bands. So if you have never stopped listening to the old noise, if you want to rediscover the old noise or if you do not know the old noise at all, then this album is recommended to you. “Corpus Offal” offers old school Death Metal in the best manner: keeping the ancient feeling alive without sounding like a cheap copy. From its own ashes, the phoenix rises! The name CORPUS OFFAL may not sound familiar to many and some of you may be surprised by a multi-review for a debut album of a not popular band! Let’s proceed in steps then: if I say CEREBRAL ROT a lot you may jump from the seat! In 2024 CEREBRAL ROT announced their split, but simultaneously Ian Schwab (guitars, vocals) and Clyle Lindstrom (guitars) announced the birth of CORPUS OFFAL. The “new” quartet is completed by Jesse Shreibman (BELL WITCH, AUTOPHAGY) on drums and Jason Sachs (ex – DEMONCY) on bass. From a compositional point of view nothing has changed since in the 2021 work by CEREBRAL ROT, “Excretion Of Mortality”, the music was written by Ian Schwab and the lyrics by Ian Schwab and Clyle Lindstrom. For sure the rhythm section has given a new benefit to the sound of the band. I said new (with a reference to old work), because “Corpus Offal” is the natural progression of “Excretion Of Mortality” and everyone who enjoyed CEREBRAL ROT will not be disappointed! So, for the one of you who doesn’t know the band, they deliver the most rotten and putrid Death Metal, characterised by fast accelerations, shuffled by slow down and a sick growls. CORPUS OFFAL do not propose anything innovative or new, but they have the ability to produce solid and well-played work! CORPUS OFFAL’s self-titled debut is here, and if you were a fan of CEREBRAL ROT, prepare for something familiar yet even more… well, offal. Emerging from the remnants of that cult band, CORPUS OFFAL, featuring core members Ian Schwab and Clyle Lindstrom, alongside Jason Sachs and Jesse Shreibman, offers putrid Death Metal, with a healthy dose of Goregrind thrown in for extra decay. Released via 20 Buck Spin which never stop surprising with newborn staff, this album is exactly what you’d expect from a band birthed in such filth. Imagine being submerged in a swamp of decomposing riffs and slime-coated vocals. That’s CORPUS OFFAL. They channel the raw essence of Death, Gore and Grind into a festering sonic mass, and it’s superbly disgusting. Producer Billy Anderson, known for his work with masters of heavy like MELVINS, SLEEP and BELL WITCH, has ensured this album achieves maximum auditory rot. Tracks like ‘Spinous Forms Of Mortal Abhorrence’ and the self-titled ‘Corpus Offal’ retain that CEREBRAL ROT low-end groove, but they’ve cranked up the ghastliness. Schwab’s vocals are described as “gargling slime vox” which is honestly the perfect way to put it – they narrate tales of morbid poetry, decomposing flesh and gruesome deeds, all pulled straight from some nuked morgue basement. Each song feels like a medical examiner’s report gone completely psycho. From the opening ‘(Into) Purging Creation’ to the final shudder of ‘Secreted Effluence (Spilling)’ the album is a relentless onslaught. It’s a bludgeoning autopsy of sound that leaves you feeling drained, disoriented and just a little bit whirled. If you crave Death Metal that’s raw, disgusting and utterly committed to sonic carnage, then this CORPUS OFFAL record holds that all. After their 2024 demo, North American outfit CORPUS OFFAL has just released their first and self titled album through the 20 Buck Spin label. And it has everything to send waves throughout the global underground. After a couple listens, I get why all my friends and so many people out there are recommending this album. First off, the music itself has so many markers when it comes down to the old ways of Death Metal. Four spins into it, the mix of influences becomes a tad more evident, but the way this band is composing and executing their music sets them apart from all the copycats. The density and the heaviness are there. It took me back to say early INCANTATION, but there is also an undeniable sick atmosphere akin to early AUTOPSY. And those are only two of said influences. There is also some Finnish (DEMILICH) and Swedish (GRAVE) notches thrown in there. But, and this is the big but, CORPUS OFFAL has managed to come up with their own style and some pretty memorable songs. The riffs and especially the eerie melodic leads evoke a very specific era of this style of music, when every band that came out had a distinct sound. The production is powerful and murky. Yet the mix is clean. It allows every instrument to dwell in their own space. I really wonder how their mixing engineer was able to process and combine such a thick guitar and bass tone with the pounding drums and the really low gurgling vocals. I thought the master was a little bricked, but after some further analysis, it became evident that this album offers a lot of dynamics within the wall of sound it creates. Ian and Clive can churn out a huge amount of riffs combining creepy melodic tremolo riffs with palm mutes and some artificial harmonics that keep the songs interesting and varied. I also have to highlight bassist Jason’s role. He holds the rhythm section tight and solid between the insane riffing and the surgical drum work of Jesse. His use of cymbals and fills is amazing, accentuating blast beats and slow patterns alike. Also, Ian’s vocals have a very Antti Boman-esque tone to them. So yes, I concur on al the recommendations I have been given. CORPUS OFFAL has crafted a fine piece of timeless Death Metal. In my humble opinion, this is an album that will carve its well deserved place as one of the best in the past 10 or so years. I urge to get it ASAP. And I am already looking forward to their next album. It can only get better from here on.
