EDGE OF SANITY’s debut full-length album, “Nothing But Death Remains”, is a true classic of Death Metal for sure and it has earned its place in the genre’s history. Originally released in 1991, this raw and intense album is now reissued in a deluxe 2 CD jewelcase edition, via Century Media Records, giving us the opportunity to revisit the band’s starting point. EDGE OF SANITY’s 2024 reissue of “Nothing But Death Remains” features the remastered original, a remix and even an alternative rough mix from 1991, each version offering a new lens through which to appreciate this stone. EDGE OF SANITY showed an approach to Death Metal that was different from many of the other Swedish Death Metal bands. They embraced a more brutal, American sound. This debut displays the band’s exploration of extremity, without sacrificing musicality. The album feels chaotic and unpredictable, creating both brutal aggression and moments of a certain melancholy. These contrasts are what put EDGE OF SANITY in a different place; while the album may explode in fury one moment, it’s (at the same time) capable of taking you into a dark, atmospheric space. Despite the album’s rawness that we all heard when we first heard this masterpiece of Death Metal, this album has an authenticity that newer, or more polished releases often lack. It’s an album that wears its age with pride, and the remixed version will certainly serve to enhance the experience. It will give us the chance to hear EDGE OF SANITY’s vision with clarity, bringing out the nuances that might have been lost in the original mix. And this reissue is not only celebrating the album’s legacy but also showcases how much the band has evolved since their formation. While “Nothing But Death Remains” is raw and unpolished in places, it is an essential influence on the Death Metal cosmos. The added bonus of the alternative 1991 rough mix is a fascinating look at EDGE OF SANITY in their formative stages, raw and with potential. In conclusion, the reissue of “Nothing But Death Remains” is here to show EDGE OF SANITY’s role in constructing Death Metal in the early ’90s. It’s an album that still holds up after more than three decades, showing how ahead of their time the band was. The remixed versions offer a fresh perspective, and the new mix offers a glimpse into the early vision of the band. “Nothing But Death Remains” is definitely a cornerstone of the genre.
