Dutch Doom / Death Metal… back in the day, about 20 years ago, that was something. Nowadays, well, it’s a bit different. You see Doom / Death Metal relates to the primeval Doom Metal, which is also maybe the foundation of all things heavy. But whereas Doom Metal is mostly like the sound of a condemned soul dragging heavy chains, to keep it interesting a few tempo changes are needed. You see even going way back to the early Metal days, even if playing slow and per se sounding heavy, sometimes an upper tempo was always welcome. Bands like CANDLEMASS or SOLITUDE ATERNUS although called Doom Metal, are wise enough to use some, let’s say, faster tempos here and there and make things more interesting. But others like ST. VITUS for example keep it simple and slow. In that second case we might put this band, formed by veterans of the Metal scene from that country. They plays slow and hardly there is any upper tempo to add a bit more variety. Instead they rely on basic simple, yet effective riffs for their music. And of corpse, cavernous vocals. Similar to BEAST OF REVELATION, a band that also is related to the Dutch scene, although I do find EXTREME COLD WEATHER more interesting. Yes, early PARADISE LOST and ASPHYX are names to be mentioned, and of course those demo days bands from Holland. The blood lineage is there, and proud of it. Those of you that like it slow and decadent like a body slipping out of life, will surely find this very good. But on the other hand, if you like your doomed Metal of Death with some bursts of speed and violence, you will not find it here. In any case there are some really great songs with a lot of emotion (or lack of it, whatever you feel) and obviously they are true representation of evil Death and Doom.
