GIRLSCHOOL
WTFortyfive?

The album title underlines the surprise about the own perseverance. What the fuck, fourty five years in the name of Rock’n’Roll already? Still with two of the founding members remaining, singer and guitarist Kim McAuliffe and Denise Dufort on drums they do remain absolutely true to their colours, why change a winning concept? While songs like ‘It Is Like It Is’ or ‘Up To No Good’ are these typical GIRLSCHOOL songs, which exactly move on the border between Power Rock and early Heavy Metal, others like ‘Bump In The Night’ and the partly bluesy inspired ‘It’s A Mess’ appear with a groove, putting a lot of energy in a catchy chorus and even have a nice Pop appeal. Take an old, thousand times heard AC/DC riffing, the fitting drumbeat and on top the raspy, smoky voice of McAuliffe and you get ‘Believing In You’, which transports the right feeling for that type of solid Rock songs. Song structure simplicity like in ‘Into The Night’ and ‘Party’ always was an ingredient of their songs, and on this album, again – no surprise – they make a lot out of little. And – again no surprise – they do it really good! GIRLSCHOOL are and always have been well old friends of MOTÖRHEAD, so it’s more than consequent to finish their “What The Fuck Fourty Five” record with a ‘Born To Raise Hell’ cover version which even does welcome Phil Campbell… and Biff Byford… and even Duff McKagan. Probably he was just there, hanging around outside the studio, jumping in to make the bass louder. Makes the song a bit more punkish in the end. Sounds honest, like all musicians had lots of fun making the record. And a drink… or two. Rock’n’Roll stories, as they should be. Happy anniversary – here’s to the next couple of loud years! www.facebook.com/girlschoolofficial, www.sl-music.net
