This 3-track demo by GOATH, a band featuring members of DEATHRONATION, was released on tape and CD-R and features three tracks that, commendably, show personality, not sounding all the same. The first and longest begins slow, building atmosphere, until all hell breaks loose and we are shown what we’re dealing with here, namely Black / Death Metal. I liked the fact that the sound is very organic – it’s almost as if being in the rehearsal studio with the guys, you can hear fingers on strings and everything, but at the same time potent and well-recorded. My sole complaint is that the voice is too low in the mix; to my ears it’s too muffled and in the background, even if the vocalist Muerte does a fine job all the same. The second track is faster-paced and more typical, but still very good. It brings to my mind the early days of bands like DARK FUNERAL, but it’s not just a copy. And, interestingly, the third and final track features some laudable and well achieved experimenting with Muerte’s voice. The effort pays off, as instead of being just more of the same old, there is an embryonic identity in GOATH that may prove a fundamental lever should the band try to rise above the mire of the indistinguishable bands. The trio is quite apt at playing their instruments, and I particularly appreciate the inspired drumming throughout the whole of these 12 minutes of blasphemy. Very nice presentation and first effort; give them a try at www.facebook.com/goath666, https://goath.bandcamp.com
