The Impalement

One man bands usually are great or not so great. Sometimes they show a surprising amount of talent and resourcefulness. And sometimes they show huge limitations and amateurism. In this case, founder and sole member Beliath brings a lot of the former, since “Impalement” is an amazing display of blackened Death Metal. The production is right on point. Every instrument sits right where it should. The mix is huge and sharp, yet a little too polished for my personal taste. The thick and enormous guitar tone is aided by a pummeling bass tone and some really hard hitting drums. IMPALEMENT’s debut is a fast paced, blast beat attack with lots of double bass, tremolo riffing and really good melodies. Also, some heavy slow parts which gives the listener the opportunity to breathe, since “Impalement” kicks you in the face right at the very start and never loses grasp. Riff after riff, Beliath shows that he knows his craft. After the third spin, I found myself remembering a lot of those riffs and even humming some of the melodies. Such memorable parts are really hard to come by, especially nowadays. And his (bluesy?) lead work is really solid throughout the album. Florian Klein (aka Torturer) whose credits include bands such as BETHLEHEM, MOR DAGOR and BELPHEGOR, is the guest drummer on “Impalement”. And his performance is simply perfect. I cannot believe how he throws in so many interesting patterns and fills without saturating the music. Basically, any fan of Death AND Black Metal should buy or at least give “Impalement” a listen. I can tell there is a lot of blood and sweat put in here and it shows. This is one of those albums that screams Death Metal without relying on old rehashed formulas or past glories. Fave songs: ‘I Am All’, ‘Thus I Spoke – Götzendämmerung’ and ‘Within The Court Of Rats’.
