NECRONOMICON
Pharaoh Of Gods
(Unique Leader Records)
54:10min

This is actually an “old” album that was released the first time back in 1999 by Canadian label Hypnotic Records (Voivod, Kataklysm etc.), but that release was never sold in more than 1000 copies, so now Unique Leader has decided to do something about that. To give you an idea about were we are musically I would say that it’s somewhere between old Morbid Angel and some Nile (without being as brutal), but I guess that it has a lot to do with the production and the whole feeling in the music. The music generally got a great flow and here and there some great riffs, but I think that the tracks are a bit long overall, about five minutes. They got some rather weird breaks (imagine a break with just bass and lead guitar) that I think ruins some of the songs a bit. They also got these Alas kind of female pieces, that I don’t really like (I still haven’t heard female vocals in Death Metal that I thought were great actually…). There are also a lot of these elements / intro pieces that bands like Nile have become very known for, you know, slow passages with different exotic instruments. Since the recording of this album main man Rob “the Witch” has changed the rest of the line up, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with next time ! Check this one out.
