After a couple demos and an EP, Wisconsin’s power trio OSSUARY unleashes their debut album “Abhorrent Worship”. After the first spins, the oppressive atmosphere takes hold of the listener. The album feels like a ton of bricks sitting right on your chest. Their sound is massive and it is key to OSSUARY’s type of Death Metal, which combines the dominating slow and heavy rhythms with mid tempo and ferocious bursts to keep things interesting. Nick’s drum work may appear basic, but I assure you it is not. His drums provide a solid foundation, introducing nuances and slight changes over the same patterns that help build up the different parts of the songs. The rhythm section is completed with Matt’s bass, laying out the perfect link between the rhythm and melodic departments. And last but not least, there’s Isabell’s memorable riffs that stick to your ears like grave wax. And her vocals are the most welcomed addition to OSSUARY. They are vicious, gurgling and macabre, oozing with evilness. The production is simply perfect, combining crushing guitar and bass tones with an organic drum sound that creates an astonishing thickness without being muddy or unclear. And although this is a modern recording, it does not feel overproduced or too polished. There is a ’90s vibe present here, with a mix that gives every element its place. I also think the master feels very dynamic, leaning a bit towards the bass side just to keep that murkiness and overall atmosphere. So, basically, “Abhorrent Worship” is just stellar! Death Metal done the way it has to be done and then some. Absolutely and completely recommended!
