After their not-so-good demo, CARCASS followers SEQUESTRUM now present their debut album. “Pickled Preservation” shows a clear further development of the band, although they have remained true to their roots. This means that CARCASS continue to be worshiped here wherever possible. However, the Danes’ playing skills have evolved, as has their songwriting, and the days of just copying CARCASS are behind them. Of course they still move in the Goregrind area, but also allow clear Death Metal influences and thus reminds again of CARCASS, who also went this way with the transition from “Reek Of Putrefaction” to “Symphonies Of Sickness”. The guys still don’t sound particularly innovative, but more structured, less chaotic, even more musical. Of course, the musical massacre still rules here, but the Danes keep trying to pack a little variety into their sound and break away from the mere noise. A song like ‘Human Both’ shows this equally clearly as it shows again that they would still like to be CARCASS. The fact that the Danish band still can’t completely convince can be heard from the fact that the best song on the album is a cover version of IMPETIGO… SEQUESTRUM are on the right track and have made an unmistakable improvement from their demo, but are still far from being an exceptional or good band in their profession. They just follow well-trodden paths a little too uninspired to really make people sit up and take notice. In addition, the further development of the band also left a downer, because the menacingly sick mood of the demo is no longer found on “Pickled Preservation”. The album sounds less brutal, despite a better production, and just noisy. So unfortunately the Danes are still not a particularly exciting band, but they are on the right track if they continue to develop at the pace they have been since the demo and can still improve their songwriting. Until then, unfortunately, it remains an average and rather faceless album, which can only be recommended to absolute gore grinders.
