French Black Metal band SORDIDE is back with “Ainsi Finit Le Jour”, their fifth full-length in 10 years of existence. The band continues to solidify their place within the avant-garde realm of French Black Metal. Released through the label Les Acteurs De L’Ombre Productions, this nine tracks album blends their take on Black Metal with more modern elements, showing an evolution from their previous works. Having first debuted with the album “La France A Peur” in 2014, SORDIDE’s sound has morphed with each release, and “Ainsi Finit Le Jour” is not the exception. While their earlier releases presented rawer and more primitive Black Metal traits, this album shows a more refined and atmospheric side of the band that (again) sounds too modern to me but still unique. Musically, the tension between melody and dissonance plays a huge role in their latest offering, giving the album a distinct personality while maintaining the band’s identity even when they have been moving to different areas of the Black Metal territory. While “Ainsi Finit Le Jour” is unmistakably modern, the core of SORDIDE’s sound is still rooted in Black Metal’s vibe. However, elements of atmospheric Metal arrive along the albums, especially in the slower and more contemplative songs like ‘Le Cambouis Et Le Carmin’. SORDIDE’s ability to create immersive soundscapes is more evident in songs like ‘Sous Vivre’ and ‘Tout Est À La Mort’ (last song), where they weave melancholic guitar harmonies with stark, minimalist circles. The result is a deeply unsettling but captivating listening experience. The progression from their previous album “Les Idées Blanches” (2021), which laid the groundwork for this more modern shift, is unmistakable and songs like ‘La Beauté Du Désastre’ or ‘Banlieues Rouges’ encapsulate this new direction, balancing aggression with introspection in a way that feels fresh, yet distinctly SORDIDE. In many ways, the album feels like a result of the band’s journey during a decade creating music, pulling in elements from across their discography while pushing forward into new sonic territories. For those seeking an album that challenges the boundaries of Black Metal, “Ainsi Finit Le Jour” is a powerful statement from a band that refuses to stagnate. Those who follow atmospheric, intense and forward-thinking Black Metal should definitely give this one a try.
