It’s always kinda cool to hear Metal music sung in some other language but in English. Slovakian Thrashers CATASTROFY use their native language pretty flawlessly (ha, who am I kidding here!) on their newest 5-track affair, truly making things sound a bit more special for their advantage, I must say. CATASTROFY have been around since 2005, and managed to put out a little pile of demos and EPs already. That, as a tiny background information for all of you. “Tento Štát Sa Musí Zničiť!” is a strange title (at least for those ones without any understanding about the Slovakian language) of their new EP anyway – and after using the always so helpful Google translator, it turned out that the title means “This State Must Be Destroyed”. Now I am not wondering about the artwork of this EP any more either what it was supposed to be all about, showing a fully armed terrorist, with a wide grin having spread all over his face. But as for the music itself here, it’s pretty well executed yet even original sounding Thrash Metal, well… for the most part of it anyway. The guys in CATASTROFY are able to bring up some nice ideas within their aggressive, very riff-orientated Thrash Metal, which cannot be liked. The problem is that this EP could have had a better production. Now it lacks this certain punch of Thrash Metal to kill instantly, even if the band is fully armed and everything. Also, as much I like their own native language being used on this recording, unfortunately vocalist Boris Bauer hasn’t got much power behind his vocal delivery, which works a bit against them and digs some ground off under CATASTROFY’s own feet. The best song is saved for the last: a nicely Crossover tinged song called ‘Okovy’ (‘Shackles’ in English) is something I would like to hear more from them personally in the future. Also, there’s one familiar instrument used in a song titled ‘Naveky Poddaní’ (eh, perhaps it could be translated as ‘Forever Subjects’ in English or something like that?) that many Folk orientated bands tend to use in their stuff but unfortunately I really cannot specify at the moment what the heck it is (my mind is running pretty blank – sorry about that)? Due to the brave and unbiased use of it in this particular song, the song ends up sounding just kinda hilarious, and even irritating (excuse me for saying that). However, if you are the type of person who always sort of wants to make new educational trips deeper and deeper into the heart of worldwide Thrash Metal – just to explore it from many different angles, then I suggest you to add CATASTROCY on your list too.
