After 25 years of being out of print the rebels at The Devil’s Elixirs have re-released this legendary three song EP from one of Norway’s elder Black Metal statesmen KAMPFAR. Originally released in 1998 off the heels of 1997’s “Mellom Skogkledde Aaser” album this little EP was a nice touch to help tie things over until the band could crank out another killer album. Things on this EP take a slightly different approach (but nothing drastic) than what the band had previously released and that’s not a bad thing. Starting things off is the song ‘Norse’ with its wall of guitars and melodic songwriting. It’s a catchy track that walks the listener through the mind of singer Dolk as he describes his path into the forest of evergreen realms. It’s an uplifting track that pays homage to Norway’s ancestors. This version of the song differs from the one on the full-length album in that it incorporates additional keyboards (which were a nice touch). Next up is ‘Troll’. The music is way more melodic than ‘Norse’ and has a mesmerizing acoustic guitar that just grasps your ears like a vice grip. Last but no least is the song ‘Tæring’, a quick song that is under 90 seconds and is more like an outro than a song. Consisting of light guitars and vocals it’s a nice way to end the EP. Nothing fancy but a solid way to fade out of it. It was very cool that The Devil’s Elixirs were able to reissue this EP, as I think it was a solid morsal of music to satiate the thirst of KAMPFAR fans until the next album’s release. The three songs are catchy and the overall EP is just a hair over twelve minutes. Well worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of KAMPFAR’s early material. Until next time, horns up!
