Brazilian Death Metal is rising, definitely. Along with names such as HEADHUNTER D.C., EMBALMED SOULS or IMPETUOUS RAGE (by the way, 3/4 in POISONOUS play in IMPETUOUS RAGE, too), POISONOUS is another spawn of the rising Death Metal family from sunny Brazil. POISONOUS’ demo CD is a nice appetizer with just 2 songs and an intro. Due to the short playing time I think the whole demo is not really representative for what POISONOUS is all about, though you pretty much get a good impression that there are going to be great things to come from these Brazilian fellows. I won’t leave many words about the intro, as it is nothing untypical, a Death Metal intro, that’s it. We should mainly focus on the 2 songs featured here. The first one is ‘Poisonous’ and regarding to its title it is probably the band-hymn. Guttural deep voices, yet heavy and powerful and a little bit comparable to Sergio’s vocals in HEADHUNTER D.C. is the first very positive factor. HEADHUNTER D.C. is perhaps the biggest link to other bands I see here and I feel that POISONOUS can live very well with this comparison. For fans of "And The Sky Turns To Black…" and "Gods Spreading Cancer" this song will fit very well. The 2nd and last song is ‘The Black Vomit’. Familar songtitle? Well, at the first listen when I didn’t have a look on the tracklist I thought about another cool POISONOUS track, after reading this songtitle I listened again and figured out some similarities to SARCOFAGO’s classic with the same title. Indeed it is a coverversion here and a quite good one, played in the style of an own song, too. ‘Black Vomit’ was already covered by a few other bands and especially IMPALED NAZARENE’s coverversion was amazing, POISONOUS’ version is not as great and outstanding as their version and I think it can’t compete with the original version, still it is a pretty good one, though I wished that they had put another own creation on this CD instead of a coverversion as I wonder if they could stand the quality of the first song. Never mind, the sound on this recording is fantastic for a demo and expands the natural brutality of the songs one step further. What’s left to say is that this demo is a great start of another hopeful band from Brazil and I hope that a new recording won’t take too long. I’m looking forward to this and can only advice all of you maniacs to check this band out asap. Wonder how the musicians can manage to handle two such great bands?
