RIBSPREADER
Vicar Mortis
(Midnight Records)
9:19min

Up until some time ago I was under the false impression (due to the band’s name) that RIBSPREADER was another boring Gore Metal band. Hopefully, I was TOTALLY wrong! Contrary to my initial expectation, RIBSPREADER deliver a great piece of traditional Swedish Metal era 1991-1992. If they actually existed back then, then the "Vicar Mortis" 7” might have been considered as a classic of the genre by today. That is due to the fact that RIBSPREADER capture precisely the old Swedish breeze, from the guitar tuning and the groovy mid tempo parts (reminding me a lot of old ENTOMBED and UNLEASHED) to the grunting vocals and Dan Swanö’s involvement behind the mixing desk. It is impressive how faithful (musically) RIBSPREADER are to the ancient Swedish sound without being copycats or anything. And contrary to most contemporary bands, RIBSPREADER are able to come up with some great tunes as well! Still, in order for me to form a more objective opinion, I need to listen to their upcoming full-length (I guess it is not very safe to draw conclusions out of 3 songs only – plus an intro with total playing time of 9:20min) but this band looks promising (uhm Manolis… there’s already 3 RIBSPREADER full lengths out – Frank). So in few words if you are into Swedish Death Metal and need some new stuff to reminisce the good old days then you should definitely buy this one: www.myspace.com/serenityinobscenity. Each 7" comes with a pro full colour jacket and has a special bonus within as an extra for the fans. They sell for $7 US, but make sure to contact the label for individual shipping costs: midnight666_records@yahoo.com
