“Total Maniac” is the sixth full length album by the German band WARHAMMER. If you’re not familiar with this name, this combo comes from the Ruhr area and strangely doesn’t play the typical teutonic Thrash Metal that has made this area famous, but it’s a pretty competent HELLHAMMER and early CELTIC FROST clone. The sound, the production and the concept image, everything is true to the original Swiss band from the early ‘80s. Here we have a well made hellhammerian beast through ten songs for almost 46 minutes of old school and primitive extreme Metal in its purest barbaric and raw way. It’s admirable how WARHAMMER continue the legacy of Tom G. Warrior’s early projects and stay faithful to the original spirit of works such as “Triumph Of Death”, “Satanic Rites”, “Apocalyptic Raids” and “Morbid Tales”. So if you’re looking for something original, WARHAMMER is not your band, but if you’re into ancient Metal pioneers and obscure satanic hymns, you’ll find creativity, passion and dedication in the WARHAMMER’s formula. It’s exhilarating yet unbelievable at the same time to hear how these guy can re-create the tone of each instrument in the most uncontaminated way. A note of merit goes to the latter Volker “Iron Lung” Frerich, who passed away in 2021. “Total Maniac” was released by the band and Ván Records on March 12, 2025, concurrently with the 4th anniversary of Frerich’s death. Some of the songs were originally written over the course of years back to 2012 to 2020. All recordings were in the presence of Volker, who passed away two weeks after the recording process. In conclusion, “Total Maniac” is a killer exercise of dedication to the roots of extreme Metal as well as a tribute to a late member of the German scene.
