DOOMENTOR
...Of Pestilence, War And Death
(self-financed)

German Black Death Doom Metallers DOOMENTOR have self-financed their fifth full length album titled “…Of Pestilence, War And Death”. For those of you not familiar with the group, the quartet has been around since 2011 hashing out four previous LPs with their last effort being 2022’s “Doom What Thou Wilt…”. Consisting of bassist Fabian (BLOODDUST), drummer Balor (ex – MAYHEMIC TRUTH, BLIZZARD), guitarist Matthias Klews (BLIZZARD), vocalist / guitarist Atze (BLIZZARD) they have the early ’90s second wave of Black Metal and ’90s era Hellenic Black Metal sound mixed with ’70s era Doom music and harsh guttural vocals. I took a gander at some of their previous work to get an idea of the band’s style. The first track on this album is the self-titled song. It starts with an enchanting instrumental intro before quickly jumping into the heavy bass doom riffs. The music is catchy, gives me an early Black Metal DARKTHRONE mixed with ominous bass guitars. The songwriting is solid with song titles like ‘Burn The Cross’, ’Into The Realms Of Darkness’, ‘Sagittarius’ and ‘At The Gates Of The Otherworld’. The Thrash Metal side of the band is paramount on the track ‘War Sathanas’, the drums leading the charge into battle and chorus hauntingly chanting “ Waaar”. This one was definitely a song I had to hit repeat a few times. The band keeps the music mid paced and consistent without overwhelming the ears with a rogue wave wall of sound. Wrapping up the album is the epic BATHORY – esque song ‘Furor Teutonicus’ adding a sample of horns to the song was a nice touch carrying out the atmosphere. The song (especially the guitar solos) could have easily been on “Under The Sign Of The Black Mark”. The band can quickly change gears as seen in the night and day styles of ‘Soulfire’ and the party worthy anthem ‘Crusaders From Hell’. Both good songs but quite different. To sum things up, this was a fun album to jam out to, while having a few beers and grilling some food. This German crew crank out songs that are unique, story telling, creative and are each a critical puzzle piece for the album. The song writing throughout the album was artistic and at times feeling like a soundtrack to a barbarian war scene in a movie. You can’t go wrong with checking out this band and having a few brews.
