NECROWRETCH stands for bestiality, and the goal was indeed to bring more savagery and aggression to the band’s sound. With this "Even Death May Die" EP as an appetizer, one can grant the guys managed to have reached the next step in hostility. The fact of tuning the guitars higher was indeed a smart move. Not that the previous releaes of the band were not brutal enough. But with this new tuning, everything sounds way more powerful and aggressive and allows NECROWRETCH to be more to the point and sharp as fuck ! Hence, this new track reeks of speed and fury. Think of the speed of HYPNOSIA (R.I.P.), the extreme hatred of MERCILESS melted in a Death Metal whirlwind à la ANGELCORPSE, and you might get a good picture on how deadly NECROWRETCH does sound nowadays. This first eponymous song definitely stands for a solid warning for the skull splitting tunes to come on the second album to be released in a couple of months. The only flaw in my book is that there’s a lack of bass in the mix, it could have gotten a tad more presence. Still, the guitars sound very aggressive and the drumming of Ilmar (also in CHAOS ECHOES), who recently joined the band is top notch and totally brutal… And by saying brutal, I mean in the vein of SARCOFAGO or ANAL VOMIT, not the boring slam Death crap ! Then comes a cover of the very famous slaytanic anthem ‘Black Magic’. One might say they could have chosen a more original track to cover. But hey, these guys like their classic aggressive Metal. They already used to cover ‘Zombie Ritual’ by DEATH on a previous EP. So, what’s to be said this time? Well, this is pretty close to the original song, with some minor changes in chords and drum patterns, but in a very slight way. So the overall spirit of the tune is respected and is interpreted in a very fast forward and wild way. Even some high pitched screams haunt this cover every now and then and remind of the greatness of early SLAYER. Well, that cover does the job. But knowing how the guys in this band enjoy obscure stuff like ANAL VOMIT, I thought they would have gone for a less obvious choice for a cover. All in all it is a pretty good teaser for the album and I definitely advise you to get this piece of black gold before it vanishes into the oblivion of sold out records sold for silly prices by greedy motherfuckers on the internet.
